Summer Reading?

IMG_1103

I picked up the sign in Washington’s National Archive. I think it suits me. And I’ve just been called an addict by a certain young novelist (whose book is here somewhere) but I think that’s a little strong don’t you?

With the pom-pon thing in mind and it being the start-ish of the second part of the year I thought I might look at some of the books from the year so far (mostly) that you could soon be loosing yourself in.

Left’s start with the active books I’m properly reading.

IMG_0787IMG_0771IMG_1145

I decided to take Pandora’s Star on holiday and I’m immersed in it and at 1152 pages it’s sink or swim. Luckily is swim. I have no idea how he keeps everything balanced and tracked but so far so fun. I picked up a copy of Sherlock Holmes in the states as I love the hand small size. Not that you can tell from the pic. It’ve got some digital copies and the audiobooks but it’s still nice to have a copy around. And Spellwright is the books I was reading before I left.

The three below are books I promised I’d try  to read before I left but my analyse paralyse sort of put paid to that.

And that leaves these. I challenge you to find them samey, well apart from the Holmes ones. They might share genre or themes but I think you’d be hard pressed to say there isn’t a diverse and vibrant well to draw on when it comes to reading. And this is only a small but invidually selected slice of what’s available.

IMG_0783 IMG_0814 IMG_0817 IMG_0821 IMG_0825 IMG_0832 IMG_0853 IMG_0856 IMG_0868 IMG_0869 IMG_0877 IMG_0665 IMG_0669 IMG_0713 IMG_0716 IMG_0721 IMG_0567 IMG_0779 IMG_0782IMG_0775

I’d happily read any of them or they wouldn’t be up there but I am very excited by Changes, The Midnight Mayor, City of Ruin, The Desert Spear, Engaging the Enemy, New Model Army, Empire of Light, The Restoration Game, and A Star Shall Fall for no more complicated reason that earlier books have all appeared on the blog and I’m keen to reacquaint with them . I’ve been hearing great things about the rest too.

Any thoughts? Any you want to read or have read? Any I should burn? Or read NOW? Is this  a diverse selection or am I just deluding myself?

Wow! That’s some list. I like the look of most of them. Particularly Adam Roberts, Kim Stanley Robinson and after reading and enjoying Stepehn Deas’s The Adamantine Palace I would be interested to read The Thief-Takers Apprentice.

Instead of a summer reading list I posted recently my TBR pile for the rest of 2010 which contains 28 books including some real door stopper like UNDER THE DOME by Stephen King. I will definitely read these 28 books. Of course I have a lot more unread books. And in case I find some more time I will read more.

    I read
GHOSTS OF MANHATTAN by George Mann
THE OSIRIS RITUAL by George Mann
CITY OF RUIN by Mark Charan Newton
    SPELLWRIGHT by Blake Charlton

My current read is THE DREAM OF PERPETUAL MOTION by Dexter Palmer

LEVIATHAN by Scott Westerfeld is on my TBR pile.

Beside that I own copies of
THE LAST STORMLORD by Glenda Larke
THE DEED OF PAKSENARRION by Elizabeth Moon

I ordered a copy of SACRED TREASON by James Forrester in advance.

    ENJOY READING1

I have a few of those on the TBR myself. The ones I don’t, and naturally in the ways of sod’s law want to read more, that I would really like to know more about are the Guy Adams and the Catherine Webb. Don’t know if its the covers or what but they very much appeal!

I’m seriously enjoying Wonders of a Godless World by Andrew McGahan, but it’s not a light and fluffy summer read. Horatio Lyle is, though, so you might want to give that a go! Nothing worse than bending your brain while you’re trying to relax.

Put down whatever you’re reading and read ‘The World House’ right now. It’s gorgeous :)

Sorry for the late replies. I’ve only been back a week and I want another holiday!

@sean KSR is going to take a while it’s a big book! I have dipped into Thief Takers and I was drawn in.

@ediFanob Oh I have Dream of P – sigh another in the TBR of wonders waiting for me! I hope you like Under the Dome and the other 28! At my currernt rate I’m going to be lucky to get one a month read.

@Simon Adams and Webb are supposed to be very good especially Adams as Graeme has just said,

@Woodge: I’m trying to get Spellwright read at the minute. I’ve got to clear the backlog of half read books. I’ve been dipping in and out of Holmes via the book and audiobooks that I’m not sure how far as I’ve got but enjoyed them immensly. Retribuation Falls is going to be interesting as I’ve heard good and some bad about it. Will try it with an open mind.

@Basil – thanks for the warning the cover makes me think it’s going to be nice and light reading…. must remember it’s not.

@ Graeme – oh thanks for that. I’ll actually put it somewhere where I can see it then! Pandora’s Star and Spellwright have to finished first otherwise I never will! Glad Hope lef you type a line :D

    That’s an impressive list.

Already on my TBR pile …

I will be reading ‘Spellwright’ soon. A friend raved about it and I like the idea of the chaos that ensues when the main character cannot ‘spell right’.

‘White Cat’ – I’ve read Holly Black’s young adult books and I like her storytelling, so I’ll definately read this one.

‘Wolfsangel’ – another one a friend has loved and read in one sitting and told me it’s a must read. He would not discuss the book in detail until I’ve read it also as he knows I hate spoilers.

The rest of the list …

I was thinking about trying Lud-in-the-Mist a while back – for the simple reason that Neil Gaiman highly recommends it :) .

I’ve read Canavan’s the Black Magician Trilogy which was entertaining although I remember finding some plot points predictable (or maybe she foreshadowed them too obviously), but I think I’ll wait until this second trilogy is complete before I read them.

I actually picked up ‘Of Saints and Shadows’ and considered it … but in the end went for my current read.

Ooh. Stephen Deas writing for young adults now? Interesting …

Currently reading – ‘Blood Oath’ by Christopher Farnsworth. Vampirism sans aristocratic romanticism. Supernatural historical thriller mix is a new bent (at least as far as I’m aware) so I’m hoping to be blown away by this one.

Anyway that sure looks like a quality TBR pile. Not heard of the Janus House before but intrigued by the use of Janus … off to read a blurb about that one.

I tried to read the Hope Mirrlees title — Lud-in-the-Mist — a few months ago and I’m afraid I didn’t get beyond the first chapter. My fault entirely. I was looking for something to dive straight into, but the prose is very dated, and so the first chapter went on too long telling us about the story we were about to read that it eventually put me off.

    Hah! Serendipity!

Stewart put me onto this blog, as I’ve just started my own and The Dream of Perpetual Motion is my first review! It’s excellent: read it ASAP.

Apart from that: I’ve read The Haldeman (cool) as is the Adam Roberts. Not *really* keen on George Mann (though I’ve only read the other “Newbury and Hobbes” book. It wasn’t so good).

Also have the Beckett and KSR to read.

Be interested to see what you think of the Spufford, actually?

Both of those I think are kinda genre edge books – they keep a foot near the real world – both look good and are highly recommended.

I see you finished God of Clocks – I know he’s doing something different for his next one – I’ll have to hunt out the blurb. I know his editor posted it on twitter not so long back.

Not a light summer read you say… might have to save it for a dark and stormy night.

    Hello, welcome back!!!

Blood Oath has caught my eye. Any good?

Yeah Deas is. interesting what I’ve read so far.

I need to finish Spellwright… I’ve started it but I’m in a murder mode and not really into my fantasy at the minute…
