A couple wake up in the morning. The man’s feelings intensify as he describes the process of getting up and preparing coffee.
We’ve moved on to a more literary focus with Lovers in the Age of Indifference, which takes a zoomed in look at tender and surreal moments in the lives of lost souls and loves.
In this one Guo invokes a sense of the intensity of emotions that are flowing constantly through this man as he processes own feelings whilst the woman in the story seems more distant and remote.
It’s a short and focused tale that shows the internal deviation that’s caused by wanting more from a relationship that you are going to get.
*Xiaolu Guo has also written UFO in Her Eyes.
