In the Mail: Saturday 23rd January Bumper Edition

The In the Mail feature is back after a bit of a debate earlier this week. It’s a bit of a bumper edition as it contains almost a months worth of books. They are mix of proofs (proper ARCs I’d guess you’d call them) and finished editions. Some are released in January, some February and some further in the future. Some I’ve requested The Bookman, some get offered like Lex Trent Versus The Gods, some are specially sent like The King of Crags, and some are monthly mailings.

The intention isn’t to cause jealousy but to show you some of the great books that are coming out and to remind me that I need to read more crime and thrillers.

Clicking each pic should take you to Amazon.co.uk for no other reason than they have this link making thing.

Hope you see a few that take your fancy and I’ll have some thoughts on the books at the end of this post.

Little Hand Clapping by Dan RhodesA Matter of Blood: The Dog-Faced Gods by Stah Pinborough Naamah's Kiss by Jacqueline Carey Servant of the Underworld: Bk. 1: Obsidian and Blood Trilogy by Aliette de Bodard The Missing by Jane Casey Grave Secret by Charlaine Harris Daisy Chain by G J Moffat Lex Trent Versus The Golds by Alex Bell The Bookman by Lavie Tidhar Fall of Thanes by Brian Ruckley Zombies: An Anothology of the Undead Edited by Christopher Golden The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin Impact by Douglas Preston Vanished by Joseph Finder The Hit by Patrick Quinian The Dov of Death by Peter Tremayne Arms-Commander by L.E Modesill The Boat to Redempion by Su Tong The Blashpemer by Nigel Farndale Long Time Coming by Robery Goddard The City & The City by China Mieville E-FORCE: State of Emergency by Sam Fisher The Toymaker by Jeremy De Quidt Killer by Dave ZeltsermanThe King of Crags by Stephen Deas

Dan Rhodes is at the top of this post only because the pic is too big but I’m chuffed that he’s there. I’m really looking forward to Little Hands Clapping I didn’t even know it was coming out. Dan is an alumni of the University I got my Creative and Professional Writing Degree from.

The Toymaker has been having some excellent reviews. The City & The City is having mixed ones but I liked Un Lun Dun and haven’t read any of his other works so haven’t formed an opinion yet. The King of Crags I’m keen to read as I’ve been hearing some great things about book one, The Adamantine Palace (out now in paperback). The Dove of Death is book twenty of a series though there isn’t any mention of the others so I hope I can jump on here. Sarah Pinborough is hot debut this year as is The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Going to try Vanished and see if I can get into another genre.

But I must admit the most exciting book on the list is Zombies: An Anthology of the Undead – I’m missing this whole zombie thing…. brain??

Any books you want ? Who knows I might send you a copy…

I have only read one of China Mieval's books namely Iron Council but I quite enjoyed.

From the reviews of The City and The City I would like to read that as well.

Go on be a devil and send it to me !
  • i'd never heard of it before your post, but The Blasphemer sounds really good, and i keep hearing about The City and The City, so those two would probably be at the top of my wishlist.

Glad The Blasphemer is getting some attention :)

I definitely want: The City and the City by Mieville and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I need to read the former for a paper I'm working on to be presented in Lincoln (UK) in July, and I want to read the latter because I'm in an "expanding my reading world" mode and that one sounds really interesting.

The others are definitely curious, but those would be at the top for me.
  • Recieved the new Pinborough myself, much to my surprise, along with some other new hotness from Gollancz. Really intrigued by Stephen Deas, though I haven't read anything he's written, and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms looks to be shaping up to be the fantasy debut of 2010. Must get my paws on a copy of that.

I touched on The City & The City in a Kraken preview on TSS but let it be said, for all that the reaction to it was mixed, it's an undeniably powerful novel; written, Mieville has said, as an ode to his mother, and an incredibly beautiful one at that. If you can stomach the crime fiction elements, it's certainly his most consistent effort since the Bas-Lag books.

Looking forward to The City and Kraken - need to Krack-on!
  • Of all the one's there that I don't have, the real grabber is Sarah's A Matter of Blood. But as I already have too many books to read, I haven't bothered hassling for a copy. It's one of the few books this year that I'd think of getting an actual physical copy of. Hopefully Sarah will do a signing somewhere.

Ooh! Some interesting books there... intrigued by The Bookman, The Toymaker and The Blasphemer so will go off to amazon to find out more :) Have Namaah's Kiss pre-ordered so impatiently waiting for that, and have already added Servant of the Underworld and King of Crags to my wislist. The Peter Tremayne book is calling at me too. I wasn't a fan of his Sister Fidelma books, but he writes excellent Irish history books as Peter Beresford Ellis, so am keen to find out what he does with ancient Ireland.
All in all, you are going to have a lot of reviews for me to look forward to :)
    Happy reading!

Wow - the power I have... all of the first three have been getting some great reviews. I think it's a Sister of Fidelma book but it's not listed as one...

I have a lot of reading! I'll try and turn them around asap :)
