Just look at that amazing detail in the illustration- What at first glance is a skull is two men. Very cleverly done! (Found via Orbit’s blog)

The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart by Jesse Bullington is out from Orbit late October 2009.

Here’s the blurb to keep you going until then:

In the plague-wracked and devil-haunted darkness of Medieval Europe, an elite few enjoy opulent lives while the majority ekes out a miserable existence in abject poverty. Hungry creatures stalk the deep woods and desolate mountains, and both sea and sky teem with unspeakable horrors. For those ill-fated masses not born into wealth, life is but a vicious trial to be endured before the end of days. Hegel and Mengele Grossbart could give a toss. Being of low birth means little, after all, when the riches of the mighty wait just inside the next crypt. The graverobbing twins know enough about crusading to realize that if one is to make a living from the dead, what better destination than the fabled tomb-cities of Egypt? But the Brothers Grossbart are about to discover that all legends have their truths, and worse fates than death await those who would take the red road of villainy…

This reminds me of a Psychology lecture (many, many years ago – so I don't remember the name of the picture) where one picture shows a beautiful lady or an old hag depending on who's viewing it.

However, this is much better. Stunning really!

I saw that in a training course once. I had real trouble seeming the beautiful woman for some reason…

  3. wend says:

Yeah, I saw the old hag initially too.

I keep meaning to ask … what's with the '29p' thingy in your comments headers? It's been nagging at me for ages … did I miss a blogpost somewhere about it?

  4. nextread says:

I thought it just counting comments – but it seems that the 29p is a reputation thing… have no clue about it.

This sounds like an interesting book. A bit creepy a bit historical. I'll add it to my lists. Great cover too, although that sort of double image always messes with my eyes a bit – I look away and expect to see hidden figures in other places!

  6. [...] Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart by Jesse Bullington has come up on this blog before when I  fell in love  with the cover. Is it a skull or something [...]

  7. nextread says:

The 29p is just the number of posts, well more comments that I've made, I think. I guess it's just something that the intense debate comment plugin does.

  8. wend says:

    Ah … gotcha. But just 29p … :o ( … It's wrong I tell ya!

I can't see Magic Eye or 3D pics that rely on both eyes working together – mine just don't do that – so it's nice to see something that everyone else can!

You haven't been reading the right books – in A Madness of Angels you get to see a whole secret, hidden and slightly disturbing side to London ;)
