Lots of posts this week about A Dance with Dragons – from Aiden, Neth Space, Rob’s Blog o’Stuff, Speculative Horizons, . All I’m saying is that the gap seems a little too long and goal posts seem to keep moving. This might be a problem inherit in longer multi-book fantasy. See below.
I’m not having a good run with historical fantasy at the minute. But in Robert’s review of Blood & Ice by Robert Masello he says, ’A mix of historical fiction, techno-thriller and horror—think Dan Simmons’ The Terror meets Michael Crichton meets Jasper Kent’s Twelve—Robert Masello’s Blood and Ice is a gripping page-turner that grabbed me from the very beginning…’
Fantasy Book News & Reviews ponders The Psychology of Page Count. I’m in the Doorstops scare me category, only because I know that’s going to be a big commitment and that in order to get a story that fills several hundred pages it either needs to be big or described in detail and I usually find that the focus is usually on things that don’t interest me and don’t move the story forward. The last big book I read was The Dreaming Void which shows how good a writer Peter F Hamilton really is.
Saying that though I’m with Liviu when she says that e-books make things easier. I don’t have to worry about how many pages there are. I can just get caught in the story. And I read books on my Sony Reader much faster than on paper. You can read a SR flat and only need to touch it to turn the pages. So much easier.
I’m with Tia on being Overbooked on Books. Not that I’m complaining. It’s just having one pair of eyes sucks on occasions like these.
Graeme has a great review of The Ninth Circle by Alex Bell.
‘‘The Ninth Circle’ is a clever tale full of twists and turns that drew me in before I even realised what was happening. One minute I was starting the book and the next thing I knew I was halfway through and trying to puzzle out what was going on’
I couldn’t help it. I’ve been sneakily reading it. I’m with Graeme I’m sucked in…
If you’ve interested in book marketing Inside the Blogosphere asks, What is your favorite form of book marketing? And what form of book marketing do you find most convincing?
I would just say that we were asked to look at the things that publishers have direct control of and that blog buzz was kind of excluded. Hence why it’s missing.
SF Signal asks, Are You Reading Too Fast? I’m a reader first and reviewer second so I’ll read as fast as the book allows.
Walker of Worlds reviews Daemon by Daniel Suarez and has high praise, ‘the combination of such an interesting plot, extremely good characters and a fully believable environment make one of the most action packed techno-thrillers I’ve ever read’
I’m also officially jealous of his ARC of The City & The City by China Mieville
A great article by Dear Author on the Fear of Free.
Dear Author has another great post called, The Sony PRS-505’s Ebook Reader Virgin. Go on. You know you want one!
Unbound reviews Ten Second Staircase by Christopher Fowler. Now that’s a series I really should start reading!
Orbit are doing a great job at showing why book covers look like they do.
Ok, there are some more great posts this week but you’ll have to click the links on the left yourself and find them. If I don’t stop now I won’t be able to fit in some more reading, and finish the reviews I’m writing. Never mind do this weeks Promo posts.
