Links: Other Places than here – 4th November Edition

This started off as the 1st of November Edition and NaNoWriMo and generally achy lethargy seems to be interfering with it.

Simon A @ bookgeeks.co.uk reviews The Domino Men by Jonathan Barnes. I read and enjoyed The Somnambulist earlier this year and I can’t wait for this one to be in paperback

SF Signal reviews The Living Dead edited by John Joseph Adams. I’m not really a zombie man… will this convince me otherwise?

The Wertzone picks and reviews a book I’ve been hearing a lot about for ages, Little Brother by Cory Doctor.

SF Signal again, this time pointing me to an interview with Neil Gaiman. (Parts one, two and three). I gave in and ordered The Graveyard Book. Damn Amazon and their free delivery on orders of £5 or above. Edit: I read the first couple of chapters today. Bloody brilliant so far!

One of Rob’s Book in the Mail caught my eye – The Accidental Sorcerer by K. E. Miils. It’s not out until January but it’s about:

He’s blown up a factory, lost his job, and there’s a chance that he’s not really a Third Grade wizard after all. Career disaster strikes again. Luckily, an influential friend manages to get him a posting. So it’s off to New Ottosland to be the new Court Wizard for King Lional. His back-up, an ensorcelled bird with a mysterious past, seems dubious. But it’s New Ottosland, or nothing. Unfortunately, King Lional isn’t the vain, self-centred young man he appeared to be. With a Princess in danger, a bird-brained back-up, and a kingdom to save, Gerald soon suspects he might be out of his depth. And if he can’t keep this job, how can he become the wizard he was destined to be ..

And I have a soft spot for wizards. What can I say?

Just in case I don’t get round a November Book Release Post (I probably will but probably not this week)  you can find more than enough potential reading with the Spotlight: Books of November post. Highlights for me include: Heir To Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier, Escape From Hell by Hal Duncan, The Juggler by Sebastian Beaumont, Just After Sunset by Stephen King, Deep Water by Pamela Freeman,  and Conjugal Rites by Paul Magrs.

mostly harmless books responds to an Amazon reviewer’s comments on Vellum by Hal Duncan, one of the few books that I put down halfway through.

Liz @ Torque Control has done quite a bit of reading. I’ve been hearing some good stuff about Yellow Blue Tibia byAdam Roberts.

Can someone tell me if Gollancz has printed An Evil Guest by Gene Wolf in the UK? I could have sworn it was in Borders but i can’t see it online and I’m sure I’m going mad… Anyone reviewed it yet?

Right times up. More later.

    Great links round-up.

Enjoyed Liz @ Torque Control's reading list. One I've had laying around for a while is The Knife of Never Letting Go. Liz doesn't mention the premise I found most interesting about the story, which is all living beings/creatures can hear each others thoughts. So, no privacy. Just mental noise always. And, the main character finds a block of silence ... what does this mean? That's all I know about the book and it intrigued me enough to get it ...

I'd forgotten about it, so I'm going to have to dig this one out ...

I must have dreamt it.... it was a trade paperback, thick dark red spine. I'll have too see if I can find out what it actually was next time i'm in Borders.

Thanks for confirming that I am going mad :D

  • So far as I know, An Evil Guest doesn't have a UK edition scheduled, let alone out.
