I just saw the cover of Twelve by Jasper Kent on Rob’s Blog o’ Stuff and found the link to a review by SFFWorld.
I don’t know why but I’m really excited by stories that mix historic events with fantastical elements though not ships and dragons…
Mark Yon’s review describes it as, ‘Think of it as Doctor Zhivago meets Bram Stoker’s Dracula in Napoleonic Russia.’ Definitely sounds different!
It’s out in the UK in January 2009 from Bantam
Here’s what the synopsis says,
Zmyeevich had remained standing and now began to speak in very precise, but very formal and strangely accented French. His voice had a darkness to it that seemed to emit not from his throat but from deep in his torso. Somewhere inside him it was as if giant millstones were turning against one another, or as though the lid were being slowly dragged aside to open a stone sarcophagus…On 12th June 1812, Napoleon’s massive grande armee forded the River Niemen and so crossed the Rubicon – its invasion of Russia had begun. In the face of superior numbers and tactics, the imperial Russian army began its retreat. But a handful of Russian officers – veterans of Borodino – are charged with trying to slow the enemy’s inexorable march on Moscow. Indeed, one of their number has already set the wheels of resistance in motion, having summoned the help of a band of mercenaries from the outermost fringes of Christian Europe.Comparing them to the once-feared Russian secret police – the Oprichniki – the name sticks. As rumours of plague travelling west from the Black Sea reach the Russians, the Oprichniki – but twelve in number – arrive.
Preferring to work alone, and at night, the twelve prove brutally, shockingly effective against the French. But one amongst the Russians, Aleksei Ivanovich Danilov, is unnerved by the Oprichniki’s ruthlessness…as he comes to understand the true, horrific nature of these strangers, he wonders at the nightmare they’ve unleashed in their midst..

Oh my living crumb. I don’t care about the storyline…I just want it for its front cover…yes, I am that shallow.

Looks and sounds promising.
Wait for first reviews.
It does – where can I get a copy?
I’m with Liz, I’m into my covers – many and unread book on my shelf because I had to take the cover home.
Hi Gav, thanks for the link. Would you mind adding me to your sidebar?
Yeah, this book looks cool and interesting.
Hi Rob,
Sorry about that. You’re now added
You’ve been on the RSS feed for ages!
Gav: did you enjoy the book, as well as the cover?
Hi Mark,
Never did get a review copy – going to have to wait for the cheaper paperback to find out
And then as if by magic the review copy arrived. Now I have a dilemma. I want to read both the Secret War and Twelve – both mix vampires and history. Maybe I’ll compare and contrast?
