Quick Links: Ad Libs and Alternatives

Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist has a new feature: Ad Lib Column. This one is by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Graeme has an alternative view of The Night Sessions.

Plus his review of The Clockwork King of Orl by Mike Wild. I do actually want to read this though Graeme might have slightly lower tolerence level than me :)

I Quit! Not me but the SF Diplomat. Sometimes you just got to move on.

Bookgeeks has a review of The Name of the Wind. I’m bored of hearing that it’s hard to make a fantasy debut as it doesn’t look like there is any shortage of debuts in this area. I’ve had The Blade Itself, The Lies of Loch Lamera and this one on the shelves for ages and I’m honestly thinking after Path of Revenge that this brand of fantasy just aint’t me!

@ Bookgeek Maybe I'll try one and if I get a similar reaction I'm calling it quits. Does that sound too dramatic? Actually I'm reading The Painted Man as soon I've got a little further with Infoquake so I might put my feelings to the test.

@Graeme - That happens to be me :D I think that's why I jump from genre to genre and from writer to writer so much. I used to stick to so few writers that I got desensitised ;)

  • Any other day and my opinion of 'The Clockwork King' might have been very different. I've been feeling a little bit burnt out with it all and wanted to read something (a lot) lighter and more fun. 'The Clockwork King' fitted the bill nicely :)

  • That's three mighty fine books you're missing out on gav - and all different in their own way. I think that what they have in common is that they are all very character-driven and do not have many of the trappings of epic high fantasy. I've not read Path of Revenge, so I can't compare them with that.
