Mine too - I've probably said this loads of times before but you can't beat Garth Nix's Old Kingdom series as he only delves into the world enough to tell the story and to keep you reading. And even though he's talking a lot about Death he doesn't linger at it and he has a strong female lead characters. I'd also choose the The Hobit over LoTR anyday.

I have got 'The Book of Lost Things' I've been saving it but I'm not sure why. I think it's because I feel guilty about not having read more his Charlie Parker books. Have you read it?

I like the sound of this. 'Modern fairy tale' is probably what sold it to me. Theres a bit of the child in me that never quite grew out of this kind of story. And in some way I prefer to read novels like this that are aimed in part for a younger adult audience, as I find they take themselved less seriously that hardcore fantasy aimed at adults. 'The Book of Lost Things' (John Connolly) comes to mind when I read this review - have you read that?
